Victron vs Renogy Inverters: Which Is Best for Your Campervan?

When planning a campervan electrical system, one of the biggest decisions is choosing the right inverter. Two of the most recognised brands are Victron Energy and Renogy, but which one is right for your build?

At Libre Campers, we regularly work with both systems, and the truth is there's no single winner. It all comes down to your budget, how you use your campervan and the features you're looking for.

What Does an Inverter Do?

An inverter converts your 12V battery power into 230V AC electricity, allowing you to power household appliances such as kettles, coffee machines, laptops and chargers while you're off-grid.

The right inverter can make a huge difference to how convenient and capable your campervan is.

Renogy Inverters

Renogy has become one of the most popular inverter brands within the campervan community, offering excellent performance at a competitive price.

One of the biggest advantages of many Renogy inverter models is their UPS (pass-through) capability. This allows the same 230V sockets in your campervan to be used whether you're connected to mains hook-up or running from your leisure batteries, reducing the need for separate socket circuits in many installations.

Other benefits include:

  • Excellent value for money

  • Clean sine wave output

  • Integrated UPS/pass-through functionality on selected models

  • Easy to use

  • Popular with self-builders

  • Compatible with many off-grid electrical systems

Perhaps the biggest misconception is that because Renogy is cheaper than Victron, it's somehow inferior.

That's simply not true.

Renogy products have earned a strong reputation for reliability and performance, making them an excellent choice for many campervan owners.

Victron Inverters

Victron Energy is widely recognised as one of the premium names in off-grid electrical systems.

Their products are renowned for their advanced monitoring, exceptional build quality and integration across the wider Victron ecosystem.

A typical Victron installation often uses dedicated arrangements for inverter-powered circuits and hook-up-fed circuits, depending on the system design and applicable electrical standards. This offers excellent flexibility and control, but can make installations more involved than systems using inverter models with integrated pass-through functionality.

Victron advantages include:

  • Premium build quality

  • Outstanding monitoring with VictronConnect and GX devices

  • Excellent long-term support

  • Seamless integration across Victron products

  • Highly configurable for complex installations

Can You Mix Renogy and Victron?

Absolutely.

One of the biggest myths is that you have to stick to a single manufacturer throughout your entire electrical system.

In reality, many professionally installed campervans combine products from different manufacturers.

For example, it's perfectly possible to use a Renogy inverter alongside:

  • Victron SmartSolar MPPTs

  • Victron DC-DC chargers

  • Victron battery monitors

  • Victron Cerbo GX systems

Choosing the best product for each part of the system often delivers excellent performance without committing to one brand for everything.

Which Inverter Should You Choose?

Choose Renogy if:

  • You're looking for excellent value

  • You want a straightforward installation

  • UPS/pass-through functionality is important to you

  • You want reliable performance without paying a premium

Choose Victron if:

  • You want a fully integrated Victron electrical system

  • Advanced monitoring is a priority

  • You plan to expand your electrical system in the future

  • You prefer premium hardware with extensive configuration options

Libre's Verdict

Both Renogy and Victron manufacture excellent campervan inverters.

Renogy proves that a lower purchase price doesn't automatically mean lower quality, while Victron continues to lead the market with premium features and system integration.

At Libre Campers, we don't recommend products based purely on brand names—we recommend the equipment that's best suited to your campervan, your budget and the way you travel.

If you're unsure which inverter is right for your build, get in touch and we'd be happy to help design the right electrical system for your campervan.
